Family Archive Bookmaking Workshop with Nazanin Noroozi and Jenna Hamed

Join us from 12-3 PM on Saturday November 11, 2023 for an afternoon with exhibiting artist Nazanin Noroozi who will lead an artist talk followed by a hands-on workshop with Material Evidence curator, Jenna Hamed. Participants will create an artist’s book whose structure and content is inspired by Noroozi’s handmade paper and cinema works featured in the exhibition. The workshop facilitators will guide participants through the process of incorporating personal visual materials into their books; participants should bring family photos, scraps, reject prints and other textures they wish to incorporate. All other bookmaking and assemblage materials will be provided.

ABOUT NAZANIN NOROOZI

Nazanin Noroozi is a multi-media artist incorporating moving images, printmaking and alternative photography processes to reflect on notions of collective memory, displacement and uncertainty. Noroozi’s work has been widely exhibited internationally, including the Immigrant Artist Biennial,Noyes Museum of Art, NY Live Arts, School of Visual Arts, and Columbia University. She is the recipient of awards and fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (film & video), Marabeth Cohen-Tyler Print/Paper Fellowship at Dieu Donne’, Artistic Freedom Initiative, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, and Mass MoCA residency (MA). She is an editor at large of Kaarnamaa, a Journal of Art History and Criticism. Noroozi completed her MFA in painting and drawing from Pratt Institute. Her works have been featured in various publications and media including, Zeit Magazine, BBC News Persian, Elephant Magazine, Financial Times, and Brooklyn Rail.

ABOUT JENNA HAMED

Baxter St 2023 Guest Curatorial Initiative Recipient Jenna Hamed is an artist & art worker based in Queens. She obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion and Fine Art from Eastern Michigan University,and a Master’s Degree in Arts Politics from New York University. Jenna’s background in tactile-driven practices and critical examination of art production has influenced her practice in documentation methods via image-making, poetics, archiving, and the book format. You can find some of Jenna’s image-and text-based works in small press publications such as Dada Duende Record Club Journal, Faint Line Press, Everybody Press, Newtown Literary, Koukash Review, parapraxis, Sukoon Mag, and others. You cannot find most of Jenna’s work, as she produces publications, prints and writings in limited or unique editions, distributed when, where and to whom she feels like.
