Fuller and Murray, who both grew up in Queens, New York, will discuss the relevance of their Queens backgrounds to their work. Fuller will show recent short video pieces exploring persona in distraught situations, and Murray will show images from her recently published monograph All the Queens Men (Daylight Books, 2013) and sign copies.

Bios

Anthony Fuller (b. 1977) is a photographer and video artist living in New York City. Group exhibitions include “The Unseen Eye” at the George Eastman House curated by W.M. Hunt (2011), “One Hour Photo”  at the American University Museum in D.C. (2010), Lesser Brooklyn  at hut-hut-hut (2010), and Last Day of Magic,  part of DÈtournement Venise 2009, an official satellite project of the 53rd Venice Biennale, “Freeze Frame” Rush Arts Gallery in conjuction with Scope Miami (2009), “White Lies, Black Noise” Rush Arts Gallery, New York (2009), “What Comes Naturally” Fake Estate Gallery (2008). A selection of his photographs was featured in Dear Dave, (No. 5), accompanied by an essay by Penelope Umbrico. He received an MFA from Bard College in 2008 and a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2003.

Katie Murray (b. 1974) is a photographer and video artist. She received her BFA in 1997 from the School of Visual Arts and her MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2000. Murray’s work concerns itself with the primal and mythological. She has exhibited in solo and group shows, including: The Photographers Gallery, London, UK; Chashama Gallery, NY, 2013; College of the Canyons Art Gallery, 2012; HomeFront Gallery, NY, 2011; World Class Boxing, Miami, 2010; Kate Werble Gallery, NY, 2009; International Center for Photography, 2008; White Columns, NY, 2004; Jen Bekman Gallery, 2004; Queens Museum of Art, NY, 2004; and The Yale Art Gallery, CT, 2000. She received the New York State Residents Grant for Excellence in Photography in 1996, the Robin Forbes Memorial Award in Photography in 1997, the Barry Cohen Award for Excellence in Art in 2000, and a NYFA grant in 2012. Murray’s work has been published in various magazines, books and catalogues. Her first monograph All The Queens Men, published in 2013 by Daylight Books, is a decade-long investigation into the rites, rituals, and relationships of men. Murray is a faculty member at Sarah Lawrence College, Hunter College, New York University, and School of Visual Arts.

Joseph Maida is a New York City based artist, who has been making work in Hawaii since 2010. His ongoing series of photographic portraits, New Natives, was the subject of a solo exhibition at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in 2013 and will be included in the 2-person show, On Oahu: Two Views, in Spring 2015 at the University of Hawaii Art Gallery in Honolulu. His work has been exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art, the Bronx Museum of Art, Wallspace, Artists Space and Art in General, among others, and internationally at institutions including the Reina Sofia National Museum (Madrid), the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam), the Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna), and the Nikon Salons (Tokyo and Osaka). His work has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. For the last decade, he has taught at institutions including Yale University, SUNY Purchase, Parsons, the New School for Design, and the School of Visual Arts, where he is currently on the B.FA. and M.F.A. faculty. Maida received his B.A., summa cum laude, from Columbia University and his M.F.A. from Yale University.
