After viewing over 300 entries, juror Justine Kurland summed up her experience with this statement:
“Photography can do so many things well. The impossibility of judging photographers is the impossibility of judging apples from oranges. So rather than choosing a first, second, and third place winner, the three photographers I’ve selected represent three distinct photographic possibilities that I hold equally dear. For simplicity I will call them discovery, construction and accident. Curran Hatleberg’s photographs narrate a quasi-fictional quasi-documentary story of the American scene, drawing from the history of photography, the world as he finds it, and a highly literary imagination. Winona Barton-Ballentine’s photographs deconstruct 50’s cookbook still lives, reassembling them as enigmatic kitchen tableaus with an ambivalent attitude about domestic space and women’s traditional role in it. Andrew Russel Coate’s photograms map the pulsing lights of fireflies bouncing inside of mason jars, to record the alchemical and accidental as well as a lyrical abstraction of summer nights.” – Justine Kurland
