Exhibitions
BAXTER ST at CCNY spotlights guest curators and their selected emerging and underexposed artists in three exhibitions each year. Curators are chosen from an open call by a board committee. Shows are open 5 days each week, and last 4-5 weeks, offering exposure to new voices and creating a platform for the fresh ideas of independent curators. BAXTER ST at CCNY also presents four solo shows each year featuring the work of the Workspace Residents.
BAXTER ST at CCNY spotlights guest curators in 3 exhibitions each year, featuring 1-5 emerging and underexposed artists per show. These curators are chosen through an open call for proposals by the BAXTER ST at CCNY exhibition committee, made up of 6 board members, including the co-presidents and the director. Of these decision-makers, four hold MFAs in photography and four teach in photo programs.
Curators receive stipends of $1,000 each, and artists split stipends of $2,000 for each show. The exhibition program, presented in BAXTER ST at CCNY’s 450 sq.-ft. gallery, creates much-needed exposure to new voices in photo/video and an opportunity for emerging curators to develop fresh, innovative ideas. Each 4-5 week show attracts capacity crowds from New York’s photo world, fulfilling BAXTER ST at CCNY’s mission to create a dialogue with photography by engaging its audience with photographers, and photo enthusiasts with the innovative work of exhibited artists.
Additionally, BAXTER ST at CCNY presents four 4-week solo shows over the year, featuring the work of the Workspace Residents. Each artist receives a stipend of $2,000-5,000 for framing costs, paid through renewable grants from the Jerome Foundation and NYSCA.
